Curating a Collection
There are many ways to build a great wine collection. I think of it in much the same way that I think about food and wine pairings - there are some good basic guidelines out there, and pretty much everyone has an opinion on the matter, but at the end of the day the only thing that’s important is that you’re happy. My personal philosophy on collecting includes three tiers - affordably priced weeknight wines that I can pull out and open any time on a whim; moderately priced bottles that over-deliver for their price point and elevate a spontaneous special occasion; and a few of those put-them-down-and-ignore-them for a couple of years bottles that are going to blossom into something truly exceptional with a little more age.

Of course, in the same way that some food and wine pairings unequivocally hit it out of the park (looking at you, potato chips and Champagne), there are some wines that are guaranteed to elevate any collection. Today, I’m offering up two bottles that fit that bill - one for your spontaneous special occasion tier, and one that (though delicious today), will continue to develop beautifully in your cellar. These are the type of critically renowned wines from prestigious and storied producers that, when company comes calling, you’ll confidently pull off the shelf, knowing you’re about to enjoy something exceptional.

2018 Domaine Serene 'Evenstad Reserve' Chardonnay $64

One of the most respected and awarded producers in the Willamette Valley, Domaine Serene might be best known for their Pinot Noir, but this Chardonnay is a standout, not to be overlooked. Complex and bursting with tropical fruit, ripe peach and nectarine, and plenty of zippy acidity. At once delicate and powerful, with a long, mineral finish.

2021 Continuum $339

Continuum is a project from the Mondavi family, perhaps the most highly esteemed name in all of Napa Valley. We were lucky enough to taste the 2021 vintage (rated 99 points by James Suckling) with Brian Mondavi Borger, the grandson of Robert Mondavi. Even this young, it was a powerhouse, elegant, fresh and concentrated with beautifully integrated tannins and notes of blackberry, vanilla, and black pepper. I can only imagine how good it will be with a few more years of age.
