Rebirth & Discovery
I’ve always loved spring. What’s not to like, honestly, as the weather warms and the world bursts back to life? I’ll admit, though, that I’ve not always been great about actually getting outside to witness this rebirth. My son, who is almost a year old – with boundless energy and curiosity about anything and everything, has changed that. A large portion of my free time is now spent going for walks and finding ways to keep him entertained. While the basket of toys in the living room gets old quickly, he never seems to tire of the outdoors. So, together these past few weeks, we have watched the trees in our backyard transform from bare and lifeless, to covered in little buds, to full of tiny leaves, to now all of a sudden somehow lush and green. Obviously, I know logically that this process happens every year, but I guess that cliche about seeing the world through your child’s eyes holds true because spring has felt just a little more miraculous this year.

All of this to say that my renewed appreciation of nature and its magic is bleeding into many different aspects of my life, including the wine I want to drink. It’s spring, the world around us is vibrant and very much alive. So let’s drink some wines that speak to that spirit. Here are two bottles I can’t stop thinking about right now. I think you will love them.

2022 Josmeyer 'Le Kottabe' Alsace Riesling $32

Made by a fifth generation sister winemaking duo in Alsace, France from 45 year old vines. Certified organic & biodynamic, this wine is pure, floral, and mineral with a clean thirst-quenching acidity and bright, slightly salty finish. It is youthful, energetic, and well-balanced. Drink some tonight!

2021 Zena Crown Vineyard 'The Sum' Pinot Noir $96

Made by the famed Jackson Family of Wines in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA of Willamette Valley. I wanted to roll my eyes at the descriptor on the bottle, “Turbulent & Craggy,” but then I tasted it and… well, they aren’t wrong. This is everything I want out of an Oregon pinot noir - wild and brambly with tart cherry, freshly ground coffee beans, and the earthy green richness of the forest. Very limited availability, so take advantage while you can!
