Prize Books Sporting British Public School Crests
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
This is a singular collection of (11) diverse books that were awarded in the 19th and early 20th centuries to young scholars for academic excellence. Each octavo volume herein is a lavish tribute to the art of fine bookbinding with embellishments extending to elaborately marbled edges. The front covers of ten books carry the stamped gilt crest of the presenting school; one book - for Harrow - has no crest, however carries a dated interior label naming the recipient and school; (4) other books carry both stamps and labels. The books and their publishing dates (with presenting schools in parentheses) are as follows: STEPHEN'S LECTURES ON FRANCE, Vol. I of II, 1851 (Harrow); MANUAL OF ANCIENT HISTORY, 1865 (Merchiston Castle School); THE WORLD OF SCHOOL, 1882 (Glasgow Academy); TENNYSON'S WORKS, 1887 (Clapham High School); THE PAPAL MONARCHY, 1902 (Bromsgrove Secondary School); TWO YEARS AGO, 1902 (Uppingham School); JULIUS CAESAR, 1903 (Cork Grammar School); THE GREAT TONE-POETS, 1903 (Milntown School, Isle of Man); WESTWARD HO!, 1909 (Derby Municipal Secondary School); LIFE OF NELSON, circa 1910 (Edward VI Grammar School); THE POEMS OF ROBERT BROWNING, 1928 (Northallerton Grammar School).
