Attributed Ohio River Valley origin, mid 19th century, salt-glazed stoneware, the front of the jug is composed of applied clay in the form of a curly maned lion with a toothy grin and extended front paws, incised square symbol below lion, rear of jug features a snake-like visage at the base of the handle, the handle itself inscribed "Trader Thompson" and additionally with an upper case "K."

Acquired from an itinerant dealer by the consignor's grandmother in 1959 and it has remained in the family's private collection until this time.

A rare example of an exceptional American folk art form.

Firing line under feet of lion; firing crack to bottom; some losses to curls of mane. Overall good condition.
