A bound set of The United States Magazine and Democratic Review(Washington: Langtree & Sullivan; later, New York: J. & H. G. Langley), octavo (8.75 x 6 in.), Volumes I-XVI, three-quarter calf over marbled boards; Vols. 17-23 "New Series," three-quarter red morocco over linen boards, each volume is approximately 600 pp. and contains 2-3 lithographic portraits of prominent Americans. This publication championed Democratic politics while doubling as a literary magazine promoting the great writers of its day. Contributors included such luminaries as Hawthorne, Whittier, Thoreau, Whitman and Poe. Included is Vol. IV of Modern British Essayists Vol. IV, published in Philadelphia, 1845.

A set from North Carolina, being owner-inscribed by W.W. Faison, M.D. of Goldsboro in several places.

Normal shelf wear; chipping to leather; interior age toning; sporadic areas of foxing; overall good condition.
