Dr. William Martin was born in Virginia in 1785. He moved to Elizabeth City in Pasquotank County, NC and married Sophia Scott Dauge, daughter of General Peter Daugé of Camden County. He was the first physician of the city, but was also a successful shipbuilder, prominent planter, served in the North Carolina General Assembly and served as general officer of the state troops of North Carolina. His house, built circa 1834, still stands in Elizabeth City, NC.
