Mid 19th century, mahogany case with small top hinged cover of tiger maple, the main cover opens to reveal a velvet lined divided tray, the interior made to hold six spools of thread, single drawer to one side, the entire box with applied ivory bosses for decoration.

7.25 x 11 3/8 x 10.25 in.

Purchased by the consignor in Maine in 1985, the box was accompanied by the following history:
"This sewing box, ca. 1835, is from the Pratt family of Otsego County, NY. An interesting family, both Orson and his brother Parley were early followers of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon church. Both brothers were influential members of the first assembly in Utah."
