Born in Germany, Leutze spent much of his youth in both Fredericksburg, Virginia and Philadelphia, Pennyslvania. In 1840, Leutze returned to Germany, continuing his artistic studies in Düsseldorf and Munich. By 1859, he and his wife had returned to the United States where they split their time between New York City and Washington, D.C.

This painting was completed shortly after Leutze's most well-known work, Washington Crossing the Delaware, currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Some minor chipping to frame; some abrading in upper section of painting; minor craquelure; dry varnish; some surface grime.
