The period image is from a May 1865 sitting with photographer John Goldin in Washington, D.C., no backmark, the verso inscribed with Custer's name and affixed with a tax stamp (overall age toning with light spotting). Included are two small pieces of brick and a fragment of mortar in a 1919 postal cover pencil-inscribed with a claim that these souvenirs were collected in 1913 from the site of Custer's 1864-65 headquarters by William Watlington, formerly a corporal in Co. "A," 3rd Indiana Cavalry.
