Flown over the U.S.S. Huron during the Civil War and indicating "Pilot on Board." One side of the hoist is inscribed "Ft Fisher NC" while the other side has a large stenciled "3" and is additionally inscribed " USS Huron T. O. Selfridge, Jr. Lcdr 1864-5." Included is the flag's period wood-lined tin box with a now-inoperable combination latch.

The owner of this flag, Admiral Thomas Oliver Selfridge, Jr., was active in Civil War naval campaigns in both the coastal Atlantic and Mississippi River theaters. He commanded the USS Huron during the campaign for Fort Fisher and Fort Anderson, thus helping bring about the fall of Wilmington, North Carolina, the Confederacy's last great blockade-running seaport.
