North Carolina Confederate Soldier's Letter Archive
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Consisting of thirteen (13) letters penned by Private Thomas Blalock, Co. "A", 50th NC Infantry to his wife, Susan, in Hurdle Mills, Person County, NC. The letters, sent from various Virginia and Eastern North Carolina locations, commence in September 1862 and conclude in April 1863. The content mostly shares routine camp news while showing concern for his family's well-being. Five of the letters are in plain, hand-carried covers; five have postmarks but are lacking their stamps; one carries a Greenville CDS and two 5¢ stamps as mandated by the post office; one with a Petersburg, VA CDS is lacking one of the 5¢ stamps; one is a patriotic cover imprinted with a 13-star Confederate national flag under "WE'LL PERSEVERE." It appears to have a Proctor's Creek, VA (?) CDS and lacks one of its 5¢ stamps.

Private Blalock enlisted on March 1, 1862 and mustered into the 50th the following month at Camp Mangum in Raleigh. During Blalock's term of service, his regiment fought at Malvern Hill, VA and twice in Eastern NC. He died of disease on May 26, 1863.

Included are two 1880s letters to Mrs. Blalock from the state regarding Confederate pension payments and an unrelated WWI letter from, one would assume, a Blalock descendant.

Fair to very good, the letters generally in better condition than the covers. Condition issues include soiling, wear and the like.
