Letter and Three CDVs Associated with the Gunboat USS New Era
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Autograph Letter Signed "D. F. Barker," "Gun Boat New Era off Foster's Landing," September 12, 1862, 2 pp., octavo, to "Brother Jonathan," stating that ,"...Gun boats are a terror to the rebels... am better off here than in the trenches or in camp." Two of the CDVs, one with a Boston backmark, name this vessel, while the third is inscribed "J Barker USN." This is likely the recipient of the letter above.

A USS New Era, known to have plied the Mississippi River, was commissioned some months after this letter was penned. Further research should explain this discrepancy.

One CDV with clipped corners; the letter fine condition.
