Fort Sumter Memorial, Three Essays in Memory of Major Robert Anderson
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
(New York: Edwin C. Hill, 1915), the Lawton Edition limited to 750 copies, 65 pages, quarto, red boards, a presentation copy to Dr. George Spicer from the estate of Major Anderson's late daughter, Eliza Anderson Lawton. Apparently, Dr. Spicer's father witnessed the raising of the U. S. flag over Fort Sumter at war's end in 1865. That fact left quite an impression upon the younger Spicer, who in later years corresponded with Major Anderson's daughter and others inclined to historical pursuits. Included is a small archive of seven letters related to this book and the flag-raising, including a 1911 letter from Eliza Anderson Lawton regarding Spicer's proposed monument to her father. Rounding out the collection is a clipped war-date CDV of Major Anderson.

Badly warped back board from excessive dampness, else very good condition.
