Born in Vienna, Adler began his artistic career working in the lithography business. He later received formal training at the Graphic Research Lab and the Vienna Academy. In 1914 Adler was taken as a prisoner of war with other Austrian painters and spent the entire First World War in Siberia. He later participated in exhibitions with other Austrian and Russian painters while also holding exhibits in Vienna, Dresden and Brunn.

Adler is best known for paintings of children. The present painting, with its closely cropped composition, is among his best work and exemplifies his talent at natural coloring and rending realistic details.
