Jared Flagg studied under his uncle, Washington Allston, and exhibited his first portrait at the National Academy of Design at the age of 16. He was elected a full member of the Academy in 1849 and exhibited regularly throughout his life. Portraits were his speciality, and he was sought after by many prominent families of New York and Connecticut, including the Vanderbilts.

Mrs. Sherman (1854-1937) was related by marriage to the Flagg family.
