Le Hay, Jaques and Ferriol, Charles Augustin, Recueil de Cent Estampes representant differentes Nations du Levant, tirées sur les Tableaux peints d’après Nature en 1707. et 1708. Par les Ordres de M. de Ferriol Ambassadeur du Roi a la Porte. Et gravées en 1712. et 1713. Par les soins de Mr. Le Hay (Paris: Chez Le Hay and Duchange, 1714), being the first of two parts, consisting of ninety-nine full page plates and three fold-out engravings, plus Explication des Cent Estampes qui representent Differentes Nations du Levant (Paris: Jaques Collombat, 1715), being the second part containing a Preface, explanatory notes on the plates and a sheet of related music. Folio boards (19.75 x 14 in.), both parts are bound in contemporary calf, the gilt spine with raised bands and a red title plate.

The copperplate engravings in this celebrated compendium are after paintings commissioned by Ferriol when he was Louis XIV's ambassador to Constantinople. These works introduced western Europeans to the rich ethnic and occupational diversity of the Ottoman Empire's far-flung population.

Wear to boards with losses to the spine; front pastedown with a small 20th century bookseller's label naming Solomon S. Meyer, Amsterdam; scholary pencil notations noting references inside back cover; internally toned with occasional light soiling; binding intact.
