Le Hay, Jaques and Ferriol, Charles Augustin, Recueil de Cent Estampes representant differentes Nations du Levant, tirées sur les Tableaux peints d’après Nature en 1707. et 1708. Par les Ordres de M. de Ferriol Ambassadeur du Roi a la Porte. Et gravées en 1712. et 1713. Par les soins de Mr. Le Hay (Paris: Chez Le Hay and Duchange, 1714), being the first of two parts, consisting of ninety-three full page plates (of an original ninety-nine present) and lacking the three fold-out engravings concluding the series, plus Explication des Cent Estampes qui representent Differentes Nations du Levant (Paris: Jaques Collombat, 1715), being the second part containing a Preface, explanatory notes on the plates and a sheet of related music. Folio (19.75 x 14 in.), both parts are bound in plain contemporary boards, the spine with retaining remnants of its original manuscript paper label.

The copperplate engravings in this celebrated compendium are after paintings commissioned by Ferriol when he was Louis XIV's ambassador to Constantinople. These works introduced western Europeans to the rich ethnic and occupational diversity of the Ottoman Empire's far-flung population.

Wear, chipping and stains to the boards; 1925 owner's inscription on front free endpaper; uneven page edges; lacking plates 33, 45, 68, 69, 76, 77 and the three fold-outs; plate 99 is loose; overall age toning with some scattered spotting.
