Worked in linen thread on linen, depicting a two-story home with lawn surmounted by floral sprays, birds perched on tree limbs, and butterflies; bottom register balanced with trees and flower filled urns, inscribed by maker, "1828 Matilda Dobb Eyre 1828" and within a sawtooth and floral border. Presented under glass in a painted and cove molded frame with a gilt filet. Exhibition label en verso.

SS 26.5 x 23.5 in.; DOA 31.5 x 28.5 in.

With original receipt of purchase identifying the maker as living on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The Estate Collection of Dr. & Mrs. R. Lewis Wright, Richmond, VA

Exhibited Museum of American Folk Art, "Southern Folk Art," May 15-August 25, 1985, catalogue SFA #30. Research reveals a Jno Eyre (born about 1798) listed on the U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules as living in St. George's Parish, Accomack County, Va., but additional research is needed to determine if there is a relationship between the sampler maker and the listed.

No apparent condition concerns; examined out of the frame; conservation mounted.
