Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Oil on canvas, signed "J. Mooney" lower right, in the foreground a presumably local woman speaks with a federal cavalry trooper amid a pile of abandoned rebel ordnance. Their conversation is being held against a backdrop of the recent destruction vested upon the Confederate capital. This scene is taken from a Mathew Brady photograph and is published in the Winter 1981 issue of Virginia Cavalcade. SS 13.5 x 23.75 in.; DOA 16.5 x 27 in.

The Estate Collection of Dr. & Mrs. R. Lewis Wright, Richmond, VA

Mooney, though born in New York, adopted Virginia as home and actually served in the Confederate army. Dr. Wright purchased several Mooney paintings in the early 1970s from Young's of Richmond, Virginia.
