The back is signed in pencil "Made by Wm. D Carlton 1853", six board yellow pine dovetailed case, hinged lid with applied drop molding, applied bracket foot base with spurs, dark blue painted field with mustard, white and red central floral urn, top edge and front corners with trailing vine decoration, front bracket foot face with stylized star. Exceptional proportions at: 22 x 41 x 16 in.

William Carlton (b. 1823) is listed in the 1840 US Federal Census living in Southern Division, Orange, NC. In the 1850 Federal Census for Orange County, District I, North Carolina he is listed as a Cabinet Maker. North Carolina marriage bonds list Mary Jane Lowe - spouse: William D.
