Original Civil War Era 34-Star Flag
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Officially flown after Kansas was admitted to the Union on January 29, 1861 and before West Virginia was created on June 20, 1863. Linen construction with hand-applied stars to both sides of the canton, the hoist pierced with three sewn grommets and carrying a faded inscription appearing to start with "12 Ft", which is the fly dimension.

12 ft. on the fly; 5 ft. 3 in. hoist

This flag is not of a regulation size, indicating that it was likely made for civilian rather than military use. Such large flags were commonly flown over buildings or hung as special displays. Verbal history says the flag was descended through an Illinois family.

Corners reinforced, possibly as made; four repair patches, 2-3 in. each; several small areas of loss; areas of mothing; light stains consistent with long term storage; overall very good condition.
