Brown of Newbury Port doth make insurance, and causeth himself to be insured, lost or not lost, the sum of four thousand five hundred dollars, on the sloop Hannah and cargo...," one page, verso docketing, folio (15.25 x 9.25 in.), Boston, Massachusetts, November 22, 1799, covering a potentially dicey round-trip voyage to "Martinico" (Martinique) during the "Quasi-War" between the United States and France, affixed with a Massachusetts $1 revenue embossed paper seal incorporating the Great Seal of the United States. Louis A. Holman and, later, his son Richard ran one of the nation's most celebrated dealerships in printed Americana.

Further research should indicate whether this ship might be THE "Hannah" which ran aground the British customs ship HMS "Gaspee" in 1772.

Fold creases; age toning; overall sound paper with bold inks.
