Antique Confederate Ironclad Model,
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Ca. late 19th - early 20th c., painted wood construction with anchor and chains being only metallic elements, rests on stand bearing old manuscript label reading, "Confederate. Ram . Merrimac / March ,1862." A somewhat fanciful tribute to the C.S.S. Virginia, which was built from the scuttled remains of the U.S.S. Merrimack. The Confederate ironclad made history as a participant in the first battle between two iron ships. On March 9, 1862 she engaged the Union ironclad U.S.S. Monitor in a hot fight that resulted in a draw.

ship 8.5" x 28.5"; stand 8" x 4"

Verbal history claims this was built by a nephew of General Lee's.

Moderate chipping to bow, slight crazing to paint, missing one anchor and a small length of chain. Heavy browning and chipping to label.
