"Bert" Carpenter, born in Billings, Montana, was educated at Stanford University, the Chouinard Art Institute, and Columbia University. After teaching at Columbia and the University of Hawaii - Manoa, he moved to Greensboro where he headed he art department at UNC-G from 1964 to 1974. He continued teaching at UNC-G and serving as director for the Weatherspoon Art Gallery until his retirement in 1989. In 1999, the Weatherspoon mounted a retrospective of his work which traveled to St. John's Museum of Art in Wilmington, and elsewhere.
