Rush, Benjamin, MEDICAL INQUIRIES AND OBSERVATIONS UPON THE DISEASES OF THE MIND (Philadelphia: Kimber & Richardson, 1812), 367 pp., 8vo (8.25 x 5 in.), full calf, gilt title label on the spine. Dr. Benjamin Rush is best remembered as a signer of the Declaration of Independence and for serving as Surgeon General of the Continental Army. This objective treatise on mental illness was a pioneering work in a field that would not come of age until the 20th century.

The 1812 edition of this book was printed during Rush's lifetime and is by far the most collectible of several editions published during the first half of the 19th century.

Scuffs to covers; moderate damp stains to endpapers; light foxing throughout; the binding remains tight; small marginal split on the Preface page. Overall good condition.
