Oil on canvas (lined), unsigned, retaining an old typed label on the verso identifying the sitter and his wife, Abigail Talcott. Presented in a period gilt frame with applied composition ornament.

SS 25 x 20 in.; DOA 31.5 x 26.5 in.

A brief biography on Hale appears in S. V. Talcott's 1876 publication "Talcott Pedigree in England and America from 1558 to 1876." According to Talcott, Captain Horace Hale was born on May 2, 1786 in Glastenbury, CT. He married Abigail on November 29, 1823. Hale was for many years captain of various vessels sailing from Boston, and was engaged in the East India trade. He died suddenly in Boston on November 8, 1843.
