It was at the Art Institute that he met his wife, Ernestine Betsberg. They both received fellowships to study and paint in Paris - he in 1936 and she in 1937. He was also a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1948 and was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1952. It was in Italy that Osver and Betsberg met the Bells.
