Trained as an architect at Cornell, William Morton Jackson Rice is most known for his portraits. He studied under J. Carroll Beckwith at the Art Students League in New York and then under Emile-Auguste Carolus-Duran in Paris. Upon his return to New York, he took up the largest studio at the Sherwood Building and was eventually made an academician in 1900. His portraits are housed in numerous public and private collections including Rutgers University, Bowdoin College, Harvard University, West Point Museum, and the National Academy of Design.
