Circa 1820, oil on poplar panel, the lady and gentleman both fashionably dressed and depicted seated, unsigned, antique molding tacked on to panels for framing.

DOA 30 x 25 1/8 in.

Descended through the family of David P. Halsey (b. 1822) of Sullivan County, NY

The sitters are purported to be Mr. William Halsey and his wife. Included with the lot is Mrs. Halsey's silk belt. Family legend has it that William, a sea captain, sailed away after the death of his wife. She passed away before this portrait was completed, and her sister sat in for the artist as he finished her eyes.

Both with old varnish; line of possible re-touch to left of woman's face visible under black light; gentleman's portrait with crazing.
