Bound together - as originally sold - are the second edition of NEW ENGLAND JUDGED, BY THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD. IN TWO PARTS by George Bishop (London: T. Sowle, 1703), 498 pp., plus FAITH AND INNOCENCY DEFENDED AGAINST FALSEHOOD AND ENVY: AND THE MARTYRS OF JESUS, AND SUFFERERS FOR HIS SAKE, VINDICATED by John Whiting (London: T. Sowle, 1702), 212 pp., with an index and publisher's advertisement, octavo (7.5 x 4.5 in.), later binding with gilt morocco covers, gilt applied to the page ends and marbled endpapers added. This volume documents the horrors vested upon Quakers in Cotton Mather's Puritanical Massachusetts between 1656 and 1660. Bishop's title page alone states "...their Merciless Whippings, Chainings, Finings, Imprisonings, Starvings, Burning in the Hand, Cutting off Ears, and putting to Death, with divers other Cruelties, inflicted upon the Bodies of Innocent Men and Women, only for Conscience-sake, are briefly described."

Shelf rub to the cover; splits to the endpapers at the joints; inside clean and very good; binding remains tight.
