Identified West Virginia Civil War Discharge Medal

Manufactured by A. Demarest, New York, bronze, 37mm, hanger with "Honorably Discharged" above WV monogram, the obverse shows Columbia bestowing a laurel wreath upon a soldier, the West Virginia State Seal below, the reverse reads "Presented by the State of West Virginia," the medal's edge is stamped "OLIVER SHAFER CO F 1st REG VET INF VOLS." Affixed with a red, white and blue ribbon, the original box is included. Organized on November 9, 1864, the 1st West Virginia Veteran Infantry consolidated remnants of the 5th and 9th West Virginia regiments. Shafer appears on its roster, however his previous service is apparently unrecorded.
