Two Henry P. Moore Civil War Silver Prints
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Both taken at Cassina Point, Edisto Island, South Carolina after the Union occupation commenced in 1862. One image depicts former slaves gathered by the plantation's gate; the other shows laundry in progress. The prints, made from Moore's 6 x 8 in. glass negatives, are presented on early 20th century gray board mounts to an overall 10 x 12 in. Concord, New Hampshire photographer Henry P. Moore accompanied federal troops to the Sea Islands and proceeded to document slave life. Moore's labors produced perhaps the most famous images of the "Peculiar Institution." Included is the book EDISTO by Sara Childs Puckett (Cleveland: Seaforth Publications, 1978), which features these Moore images on pages 35 and 35. Author's autograph removed, worn jacket. Well thumbed, but useful.
