Revivalist Portrait Miniature, Mabel Welch

(American, 1871-1959), "The Model," watercolor on ivory, depicting a demure nude brunette seated with a yellow robe softly draped across her lap. Signed lower right M. R. Welch. Pencil inscription on card en verso reads " The Model / by / Mabel R. Welsh / 939 8th Ave. / New York." Matted and framed under glass. Miss Welch was an acclaimed painter of portrait miniatures and received numerous awards for her work during her lifetime. She studied at the Art Students League in Paris and received the Silver Medal of the Pan-Pacific Exposition in 1915, a Medal of Honor in 1920 from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1955, the medal for Miniatures from the National Association of Woman Artists. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cocoran Gallery in Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania Museum of Fine Arts.
