Two English Samplers, early 19th century

The first worked by Mary Ann Wilson at 12 years of age, multi-colored silk thread on fine linen depicting a stately home with lawn and grazing animals, top panel within an acorn border and verse, originally written by Philip Doddridge (1702-1751), an English Non-conformist who based the verse on the motto of his family arms: Dum vivimus vivamus ("Let us live while we live"). Framed and under glass. DOA 17.5 x 14.5, SS 15.25 x 12.25. With minor areas of loss concealed by an under linen layer. Small areas of brown dye run. The second worked by Mary Ann Mayo at age 11, multi-colored silk on linen depicting neatly stitched rows of alphabet above two rows of finely stitched flowers, birds, fruit filled baskets, and a snake entwined tree. Framed and under glass. DOA 17.5 x 14.25 in., SS 15.5 x 12.25 in. With areas of stitching loss. Stitching loss where sampler had been dated by maker.
