William Anslow Thornley (active 1858-1898), Pair

Oil on canvas, each signed at lower left "W. A. Thornbery." The first depicts a paddle steamer and ships in a harbor at sunrise, the city skyline visible beyond. The second depicting figures and ships along the shore, under the gaze of the full moon and a lighthouse. Each in matching period appropriate gilt frames.

Estate of Captain Ben Blee, Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina Captain Blee acquired much of his collection while serving as U.S. Naval attachŽ in Singapore and Malaysia in the late 1950s.

William Thornley also went by the names of Georges William and Thornbery. He exhibited works at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honorable mention in 1881 and a third place medal in 1888. He is best known for his seascapes and harbor scenes.
