"The Rocky Mountains," published by the artist and engraved by James Smillie in 1866. A Shoshone or Arapahoe encampment is in the foreground beneath the shadow of Lander's Peak, Wyoming. Presented in a somewhat later gilt and gesso frame. The original painting, now in the Metropolitan Museum, was conceived in 1863 when Bierstadt accompanied an expedition led by Colonel Frederick W. Lander.

The margins of the sheet have been cut in the corners, folded over a stretcher and nailed down. A small perforation is in the lower left margin of the sheet's visible area. Overall light age toning.
