19th century, alkaline glazed stoneware, one gallon capacity, with interior rim and faint stamp to base side "J.W.H. / Blackburn / N.C." J.W. Helton (1846-1923) was a Catawba Valley potter who took up the trade after returning home from the Civil War. His family, who later changed the spelling of their name to Hilton, continued the pottery tradition in the Catawba region.
