Historic Staffordshire Tureen of Southern Interest

By J. & W. Ridgway, Hanley, circa 1825, blue and white transferware gravy tureen depicting the Bank of Savannah on one side and the Charleston Exchange on the other side (6.5 x 8.5 in.). The lid shows a partial view of the Insane Asylum, Boston while the underplate repeats the Bank of Savannah transfer. The accompanying ladle depicts an unknown building. All pieces are bordered with matching rose and diamond patterns. The only element marked is the underplate, which is erroneously labeled "Charleston Exchange." Note that the Boston lid is appropriate for this otherwise Southern set. See Larsen's AMERICAN HISTORICAL VIEWS ON STAFFORDSHIRE CHINA, #175.

Chips to the tureen's foot plus large old repair visible under black light; lid's finial is replaced and chipped; the ladle has extensive staple and finish repairs visible under black light; the underplate has a 2 in. hairline.
