One retaining an old James S. Earle & Son label listing the address at 816 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. The first Earle came to Philadelphia from England as a gilder. After a brief stint working for another, he opened his own framing and gilding business. Earle went on to add "looking glasses," photographs (many of visiting actors and actresses), and eventually morphed into a picture dealer, exhibiting great artists of the time from both Europe and America. For a while, the Earles were in partnership with Thomas Sully who did the art buying and added a certain authority to the gallery.
