Antebellum American Terrestrial Globe
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
THE FRANKLIN TERRESTRIAL GLOBE (Troy, New York: Merriam Moore & Co., circa 1850s), the cartouche also reading "Geographical Divisions & Political Boundaries to the present date Carefully Compiled from the best authorities." The globe is secured by a brass meridian set into a wooden horizon ring featuring the zodiac; the whole rests on a four-legged maple stand with turned stretchers; all engravings are likely hand-colored. Although undated, the globe shows Alaska as Russian (pre-1867) and West Virginia (1863) as part of Virginia.

12 in. diameter; DOA 18 x 16 in.

Light stains and soiling; a splash of candle wax (removeable) is on southern Africa; a .25 in. triangular dig is in China; expected wear and minor dings to the horizon ring. Overall with an excellent patina; place names are quite legible.
