Lot 335
W. D. Washington, Burial of Latane, 1862
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Steel engraving housed in original walnut frame. The engraving, by A. G. Campbell, was entered into an Act of Congress in 1868 and distributed to subscribers of the Southern Magazine. Latane's military funeral, conducted exclusively by females and slaves, became symbolic of patriotic sacrifice to many grieving Southerners. A captain in the 9th Virginia Cavalry, Latane was the only Confederate killed during Jeb Stuart's celebrated ride around Union General George B. McClellan on June 13, 1862. Latane's lonely death captured the popular imagination and elevated his memory to the status of a national martyr. The artist, William Washington was deeply affected by the loss and gathered local Richmond women to pose for his painting. Washington's painting hung in the state Capitol, along with a bucket for donations to support the Confederate cause. Accompanying the lot are several papers on the "Burial of Latane."
