Francis Speight (NC, 1896-1989), Sketchbook
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
A Raritan Sketch Book filled with (48) sketches, the majority completed in pencil, several in ink, and one watercolor - one pencil sketch depicting a city street lined with row houses, likely in Philadelphia, with notations of colors to use in the final painting; a charming ink sketch of two children holding what may be a hymnal; one small pencil sketch of Avoca Plantation, Merry Hill, Bertie County, NC; a watercolor depicting a rural scene with river and outbuildings; among numerous other sketches of city and rural scenes. Several hand-written letters accompany the sketchbook including one addressed to the Wilmington artist, Jack Berkman, thanking him for the invitation to be guest of honor at the November meeting of the Wilmington Art Association. Another letter, dated October 10, 1961, is addressed to the Art Editors at Art News in New York and describes an art installation titled "Freeman Park" which Speight saw while "driving toward the San Souci ferry from Windsor in Bertie County, North Carolina." Yet another letter is addressed to Mrs. Capehart expressing his sadness at hearing of Mr. Capehart's death. Speight writes that he "regrets all the more that Mrs. Speight was not with me last summer." He also writes that they are living in Greenville and "have been over to Bertie County sketching, both at Shipyard launching and at Avoca."
