William Lester Stevens received his artistic training first from Parker Perkins, then later from Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson, and Phillip Hale at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He spent much time capturing scenes in the Rockport and Cape Ann areas in the Northeast. In 1944 he moved to Conway, New Hampshire, where he renovated an old farmhouse in order to escape the burgeoning tourist culture of the coast. That same year he was elected to the National Academy of Design in New York. During the 1940s he traveled throughout both the northern and southern states, conducting summer study workshops in Conway, NH, as well as Washington, D.C., Asheville, NC, and Charleston, SC. His work is featured in numerous museums including the Asheville Art Museum, Smithsonian Art Museum, Rockport Art Association, and Wadsworth-Atheneum.
