Herman Leonard was based in New Orleans and is regarded as the greatest jazz celebrity photographer of the postwar era. 130 of his works are held in the Smithsonian's permanent collection. Fortunately, his personal archive of 60,000 negatives was relocated before Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. The energetic Leonard never retired and, at age 86, was the official photographer for the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival.
