Two Lengthy NC Confederate Soldier's Letters
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
As follows: Autograph Letter Signed "Edward Jones," four pages, 4to (9.5 x 7.75 in.), Norfolk, Virginia to his sister Bet in Warrenton, NC. It reads in part as follows: "...There are a great many rumors here of intended intended attacks by Federal troops...there never would be an attack at all unless a very improbable event should happen: that our army in the field be defeated n a pitched battle...a cannonade, which began about sunrise, could be distinctly heard in the direction of Newport News...I heard one of our company say that he heard Gen Huger say...that he did not believe there was a braver regiment than ours in the Southern Army..." Old tape is placed over all creases and splits; Autograph Letter Signed "E Jones," 10 pages, 8vo and 4to, Camp Carolina (Norfolk, VA), September 18 and 20, 1861, to William J. White, n.p. It reads in small part: "...it( a steamship) rounded to and threw out the Stars & Stripes....which played beautifully in the breeze, though I could see there was a rent in it, 3 stripes were torn partly off from the others, 2 red ones & a white one in the middle, which I could not help thinking was emblematic of our Flag the glorious Stars & Bars, the rent in the old flag which makes ours exactly, representing the rent in the country (which) would make our country..." Creases, two areas of old tape repair to one sheet. Edward Jones enlisted in Co. "F," 12th NCST on April 18, 1861, likely with kinsman William Jones White (See Lot 566). His regiment saw considerable action in the Peninsula Campaign before Jones died of disease on August 16, 1862.
