Lot 410
Needlepoint Portrait of St. Vincent de Paul
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
19th century, polychrome wool on linen, half-length portrait of St. Vincent de Paul, having a narrow bottom band of black with "St. Vincent de Paul AD 1886" stitched in multi-colored thread; an 1886 typed note affixed en verso states that the "tapestry" was in the family of Marie North of Beaufort, SC until her death in 1976 at the age of 90; it was then willed to Father Zaratti, a Catholic priest from Italy who "served parishes in South Carolina," housed under glass in an ornamented gold tone frame with carved gilt fillet. Research has found a Marie North (1889-1975) of South Carolina, and it is likely that the priest is Filberto Zaratti from Naples, Italy, who arrived in New York October 3, 1953, making the voyage on the Andrea Doria.
