Elizabeth Spraggon's sampler, silk on linen worked in green, red and gold threads, with strawberry border, maker's name enclosed in central cartouche, "done by me / Elizabeth Spraggon / Whalton School," sampler is dated "April the 27 1809," initials of maker's parents and siblings stitched into each corner; bottom register with trees flanked by birds perched on trees; research shows that the maker Elizabeth, christened 12 Jan 1797 in Whalton, Northumberland, England, was the daughter of William Spraggon (1747-1831) and Eleanor Winlow (1754-1846), whose initials are in the upper left and upper right corners of the sampler respectively; initials for her siblings Hannah, Eleanor, Mary are given, as well as others not identified.
