The Virgin as Mother of God is the central figure extending protection to all; the painting behind the ornate gilt silver and enamel riza is rendered as if it were a mosaic.. The riza is stamped six times with the Russian silver hallmark and cyrillic maker's mark likely that of "Ivan Alexeyev" (Moscow, working 1876 - 1912).
