James S. Ellsworth (New England, 1802-1873)

Watercolor on paper of identified sitters Wareham Kingsley (1788-1862) and his wife, Olive Jane Avery (Montgomery, Massachusetts, 1795-1858); both holding books, within a shaded area; an itinerant folk artist in the New England area, Ellsworth is known for his miniature watercolor profiles of "New England squires, their ladies, and their children...which he portrayed with candid realism in stiff, awkward poses..." mounted together in original wood veneer frame. These portraits, A36 and A37, were exhibited in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection October 13 - December 1, 1974. The family's copy of "Catalog of an Exhibition" by Lucy B. Mitchell for this exhibit accompanies this lot.
