Pennsylvania Painted Chippendale Blanket Chest

18th century, poplar and Southern yellow pine with old red painted surface. The lid, with bread board ends, is attached to the dove-tailed case by means of hand forged rat-tail hinges. The chest has two side-by-side lower drawers, an interior till with two secret compartments, the case raised on an applied bracket foot base. Of special interest is the steel crab lock and the brass plate around the keyhole, which is inscribed "Peter Schutz / York / JN 133."
